Shri Damodar Temple History and Significance
Shri Damodar Temple, also known as Shri Damodara Sansthaan, is a Hindu temple located on the banks of the Kushawati River near Zambaulim, about 22 km from Margao in South Goa. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his incarnation as Damodar and houses a revered murti (sacred image) of the deity.
The Shri Damodar Temple was originally in Mathagam (now Margao), where the Holy Spirit Church stands today. During the Portuguese temple destruction campaign in 1567, the Mahajans moved several deities, including Damodar, to Zambaulim with support from the Desais of Rivona, who provided land and financial aid. The original temple was a significant structure, even used as a military post by the Muhammadans. According to tradition, it honored Makaji Damodar, a local who met a tragic end. In 1565, the Portuguese demolished the temple, replacing it with the Holy Spirit Church, while the idol of Damodar was relocated to Zambaulim.
