The Shree Govindajee Temple was commissioned by Maharaja Nara Singh in 1846. It was dedicated to Shree Govindaji, the royal deity. An earthquake in 1868 damaged the temple, leading to its reconstruction by Maharaja Chandrakriti in 1876. The idols were moved during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 and reconsecrated in 1908.
Maharaja Jai Singh, a devotee of Lord Krishna, received a vision to build a temple. He initiated the carving of Lord Govindaji's idol in 1776, completing it in 1779. The Ras Lila was performed for five days at Raas Mandal Pukhri at Langthabal during this time.
