Maihar's history dates back to the Paleolithic Age. It was the capital of the princely state of Maihar, established in 1778 by the Jogis clan. The state became part of British India in the 19th century. It was administered under the Bundelkhand Agency and later the Bagelkhand Agency. The state had an area of 407 square miles and a population of 63,702 in 1901. The region is known for its fertile land and forest produce.
