Chirayinkeezhu Taluk was under the administration of the Attingal Swarupam. The Attingal Ranis were entrusted by the Travancore Raja with the conduct of the Kaliyoot festival. The Ranis were related to the Travancore royal family through adoption from the Kolathunadu royal family. They enjoyed independent rights over neighbouring regions and temples.
When Marthanda Varma annexed Attingal to Travancore, he decided to assume direct control over the estate. However, the Ranis continued their independent status in many respects. Marthanda Varma introduced the Kaliyoot festival in the Sarkaradevi Temple and entrusted the responsibility to the Attingal Ranis, with finances from the Travancore royal treasury.
The Attingal Ranis bestowed the members of the military family of Niranam poets, known as Kannassa, with the responsibility of supervising the grand festival. The descendants of the Ponnara family still reside there and continue this responsibility. The temple is unique in South Kerala for its elaborate Kaliyoot festival. The Meenabharani mahotswavam is another major festival conducted for ten days in March–April every year.
