The Sarangapani Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the 12 poet saints, or Alvars. The temple is believed to be of significant antiquity with contributions from Medieval Cholas, Vijayanagara Empire, and Madurai Nayaks. The Mahasamprokshanam of the temple was held on 13 July 2015, with a large number of devotees participating. The temple is maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Through this 50 beneficiaries will have free food during noon time. The planned expense for this to one person is Rs.35/-. In this food Sambhar, Rice, Rasam, Kootu, Poriyal, Buttermilk and Pickles are provided. This free food is prepared in AnnadhanaKoodam and served during the time 12.15 p.m. to 01.30 p.m. Those who donate for free meals can come to Office and pay directly.   • Legends Beliefs
    As per Hindu legend, Sarangapani, an incarnation of Vishnu, appeared for sage Hemarishi, who performed penance at the Potramarai tank. Sage Bhrigu once kicked Vishnu on his chest, angering Lakshmi, who left Vaikuntha and took the form of Padmavati. Vishnu followed her and married her. Lakshmi was born as Komalavalli to sage Hemarishi. Vishnu descended to earth as Aravamudhan in a chariot drawn by horses and elephants from Vaikuntha.
  • Deities and Sub Deities
    The main deity of the temple is Sarangapani, a form of Vishnu. The temple also houses the deities Komalavalli Thayar (Lakshmi) and Aravamuthar. The central shrine of the temple houses the image of Sarangapani in a reclining posture, with his head resting on his right hand. There are other images of sage Hemarishi, Lakshmi, and festival images enshrined within the sanctum.
  • Offerings
    The temple priests perform the puja (rituals) during festivals and on a daily basis. The rituals are performed six times a day, and each ritual comprises three steps: alangaram (decoration), neivethanam (food offering), and deepa aradanai (waving of lamps) for both Sarangapani and Thayar. The food offerings include curd rice, Ven pongal, spiced rice, dosa, Ven pongal, and sugar pongal.

    Sarangapani is the largest Vishnu temple in Kumbakonam and has the tallest temple tower in the town. The temple is enshrined within a huge wall and the complex enshrines all the water bodies of the temple except the Potramarai tank. The rajagopuram (main gateway) has eleven tiers and a height of 173 ft. The central shrine is in the form of a chariot drawn by horses and elephants, depicting the descent of Sarangapani from heaven. The temple has two processional chariots carved out of wood stationed outside the rajagopuram.

    The temple celebrates twelve yearly festivals. The most prominent festival is the temple chariot festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Chittirai (March–April). The twin temple chariots are the third-largest in Tamil Nadu, each weighing 300 tonnes. Other festivals include Akshaya Tritiya, Vasantotsavam, Pavitrotsavam, Sri Jayanthi, Navaratri Utsavam, Deepavali, Deepa Utsavam, Pakal Pattu, Ira Pattu Pongal, Kanu Utsavam, Masi Magaham, and Brahmmotsavam.
