Sapthamadha Temple History and Significance

According to legend, a tantric trader named Chettiappar from Kerala encountered the Saptha Madhas bathing in a tank at Manakkal. Offering them his turmeric stock, which they declined, he attempted to take their ornaments. Goumari, one of the goddesses, offered to buy his turmeric, placing a flower from her hair on one side of a scale. Despite adding all his turmeric, the scale did not tip, revealing the divine nature of the goddesses. Realizing his mistake, Chettiappar sought their forgiveness and constructed the temple in their honor. Uniquely, while most Saptha Madha temples face north, this temple faces east. The sanctum houses the Saptha Madhas, with additional shrines for Madurai Veeran, Chettiappar, Dwara Palakis, Karuppannan, and Ayyanar in the prakara. The temple's architecture features intricate carvings of horses and elephants on its pillars.
