The temple's origins trace back to the Chola dynasty, with stone inscriptions from the 11th century CE indicating contributions by Raja Raja Chola. According to legend, Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, worshipped Lord Shiva here to absolve the sin of matricide, leading to the naming of the temple tank as Parasurama Theertham and the village as Parasurameswaram. Additionally, Goddess Lakshmi is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva at this site, resulting in the village being named Thirumangalam. The temple is also associated with Chandikeswarar, who sought relief from the sin of patricide here, and Ravikuruva Rishi, for whom Lord Shiva created the Kayapalguni stream.
