Saatchi Boodeshwarar Temple History and Significance

The temple is believed to date back to the Pallava period, though specific inscriptions are not available to confirm this. A notable legend associated with the temple involves a merchant and a spirit named Neeli. The merchant, after committing grievous acts, was pursued by Neeli. Seeking refuge in Pazhayanur, he was hosted by 70 local Velalars (a community known for their wisdom and integrity). Neeli, disguising herself as the merchant's wife, convinced the Velalars to ensure her reunion with the merchant. Tragically, the merchant was killed by Neeli that night. In remorse for their unintended role in the incident, the 70 Velalars sacrificed their lives by jumping into a fire pit before the Shiva Linga at the temple. A memorial mandapam stands opposite the temple to commemorate their sacrifice.
