According to legend, celestial beings, unable to withstand the torment of the Kodi Asuras, prayed to Lord Shiva. In response, Shiva released one crore Rudras from his chest to vanquish the demons. After fulfilling their duty, the Rudras sought atonement for the sin of killing. Lord Shiva pardoned them, allowing them to merge into his heart. This act led to the deity being named Rudhra Kodeeswarar. The temple's sanctum houses a Swayambhu Lingam, and the goddess, known as Pennin Nallal or Thirupurasundari, is depicted in a slightly reclined position, symbolizing her calming of the enraged Kali Devi. The temple's architecture features a four-tiered Rajagopuram, with the goddess's shrine facing south towards the distant Kali Temple at Vattaparai.
