Rishikesh, part of the legendary Kedarkhand, is mentioned in the Skanda Purana. It is believed that Rama did penance here for killing Ravana. Lakshmana crossed the Ganges using jute ropes where the Lakshman Jhula bridge stands today. The current bridge was built in 1927 after the original was washed away in 1924.
The city has ancient temples like Shatrughna Mandir, Bharat Mandir, and Lakshman Mandir, established by Adi Shankaracharya. Rishikesh has evolved from a pilgrimage site to a modern tourist town with markets offering local handicrafts and services for tourists.
