The Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangapatna is an ancient site. Built in 984 CE by Tirumalaiah, a local chief under the Western Ganga dynasty, it stands on an older shrine. In the 12th century, Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana granted the village to saint Ramanujacharya. Renovations were made by Veera Ballala II in 1210 CE.
The temple's entrance tower reflects Vijayanagara architecture. Contributions were also made by the Wodeyar kings of Mysore. The temple is near Tipu Sultan's palace and is protected as a national monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
