    The legend says that Lord Rama left his kingdom of Ayodhya and reached Ramapuram village during his exile. He found the place ideal for meditation. His brothers, searching for him, also meditated nearby. Separate shrines for them arose over time, known as Nalambalam.

    Apart from Lord Rama, the temple has other subordinate deities. Shrines of Lord Sastha and Dakshinamurty are placed in the south of Sreekovil. The complex also has shrines of Goddess Bhadrakali, Lord Ganapathi, Hanuman, Brahmarakshas, and Yakshiyamma.
