Ramappa Temple Interesting Facts

  • Legends Beliefs
The roof (garbhalayam) of Ramappa Temple is made with lightweight bricks that can float on water. Tests by Dr. Habib Haman, Chief Chemist at the Government Industrial Laboratory, Hyderabad, revealed that sawdust was used to make the bricks spongy. These bricks weigh about one-third to one-fourth of regular bricks. Though similar to the floating bricks from Bidar, the Bidar samples showed better quality. The temple complex also features two smaller Shiva shrines and a well-preserved Nandi facing the main sanctum. Inspired by the temple's sculptures, Nataraja Ramakrishna revived the Perini Shivatandavam dance, with poses resembling those described in Nrtta Ratnavali by Jayapa Senani. Despite wars and a major 17th-century earthquake, the main structure survived due to its 'sandbox technique' foundation. However, many smaller structures are in ruins. The Archaeological Survey of India now oversees the site, though the outer main entrance is largely destroyed.
  • Deities and Sub Deities
The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Ramalingeshwara Swamy. The temple complex also includes two smaller shrines dedicated to Shiva.
  • Offerings

  • Architecture
The Ramappa Temple stands on a 6-foot (1.8 m) high star-shaped platform. Its hall features intricately carved pillars arranged to beautifully blend light and space. Uniquely, the temple is named after its sculptor, Ramappa—making it the only temple in India named after its craftsman. The main structure is built of reddish sandstone, while the surrounding columns have large black basalt brackets carved into mythical creatures, dancers, and musicians, showcasing the finest Kakatiya art with their delicate detailing and graceful forms. On 25 July 2021, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple, Telangana."     The roof is constructed with lightweight bricks that can float on water, highlighting the advanced engineering skills of the time. The temple’s foundation employs the ‘sandbox technique,’ which helped it withstand earthquakes.
