Punnainallur Mariamman Temple History and Significance

In 1680, Maratha king Venkoji Maharaja Chatrapati, during a pilgrimage to Samayapuram, dreamt of Goddess Mariamman directing him to a forest of Punnai trees near Thanjavur. Upon discovering a white anthill at the indicated location, he constructed a temple, enshrining the deity now known as Punnainallur Mariamman. The temple gained prominence when the daughter of Tulaja Raja (1729–35), who had lost her eyesight due to illness, reportedly regained vision after worshipping here. The original deity was a white anthill, later sculpted into a form by the saint Sadashiva Brahmendra, who also installed a powerful Chakra. Subsequent Maratha rulers, including Thulaja and Serfoji II, contributed to the temple's expansion and renovation.
