  • Legends Beliefs
    According to Hindu legend, the place is where the moon god, Chandra, is believed to have been relieved of his curse. 'Indu' means moon, and the place Tiruindaloor derives its name from this legend. Chandra worshipped Vishnu, who appeared to please the devotee.Another legend states that the Alvar saint Thirumangai Alvar visited the temple when the doors were locked. He sang praises of Parimala Ranganathar, but the door did not open. After continuous singing, he became frustrated and asked Parimala Ranganathar to keep the temple for himself, at which point the doors opened.

    The central shrine of the presiding deity Parimala Ranganathar is made of 12 feet green stone. The deity is seen in a reclining posture, facing east. The consort of Parimala Ranganathar is Parimala Ranganayaki, also called Chandrasaapa Vimochanavalli and Pundareekavalli. The sanctum houses images of river gods Cauvery and Ganga, as well as Santhanagopalakrishnan. Brahma is sculpted on the wall. The temple has shrines of Yoga Narasimhar, Rama, Anjaneya, Suryan, and Chandra.

Each ritual comprises three steps: alangaram (decoration), neivethanam (food offering), and deepa aradanai (waving of lamps) for both Parimala Ranganathar and Thayar.
