Muthappan cursed Chantan for denying him toddy, turning him into a stone. Chantan's wife prayed and performed rituals to appease Muthappan, who then restored Chantan. Muthappan is also associated with a dog that followed him, and dogs are considered divine at the temple.

    The principal deity of the temple is Sree Muthappan, a manifestation of Lord Shiva. The deity is presented through a ritualistic theyyam enactment in two versions called Thiruvappan and Vellattam.
