Legends and BeliefsPachaimalai means 'green hill'. It is believed that a water spring below the sanctum sanctorum gives the hill its name. During drought years, water was still available on top of the hill when wells around it went dry.

Deities and Sub-DeitiesThe main deity is Balamurugan, the child form of Lord Murugan, facing west. The temple also has shrines for Vidya Ganapathy, Maragatheeswarar and Maragathavalli, Kalyana Subramanyar with Valli and Deivanai, Maragatha Venkatesa Perumal with Sridevi and Bhoodevi, Dakshinamurthi, Bhairavar, and the Navagraham.At Pachaimalai, Navagrahangal can be seen with their consorts seated on their respective mounts, which is considered unusual.

Offerings
OfferingsDevotees offer green flowers, clothes, and rose water to the Deity on Panguni Uthiram. Special poojas are conducted on Tuesdays, New Moon Day, Sankatahara Chathurthi, Pradhosham, Full Moon Day, Theipirai Bhairavar Ashtami, Shashti, and Kiruthigai. The temple has a golden peacock and a golden chariot for processions.

ArchitectureThe temple has a five-story gopuram, a feature of Dravidian architecture. The main deity is Balamurugan, facing west. The temple also has a 40 feet statue of Lord Senthilandavar, visible from Gobichettipalayam. It is one of the largest statues of Murugan in the state.

Festivals
FestivalsThe Brahmotsavam festival is celebrated in Panguni. Lord Kalyana Subramanyar is taken in a procession on different mounts for six days. On Panguni Uthiram day, thousands of devotees visit the temple, carry Kavadi, and perform abishekam. The massive temple chariot is run in the evening.Skanda Shasti Soorasamharam is enacted in Gobichettipalayam. The Deity, mounted on an elephant, presides over the function to defeat Soorapadman. The festival symbolises the victory of good over evil. Devotees fast for seven days, breaking the fast after Thirukalyana Utsavam.During Thai Poosam, Kavadi abishekam is performed continuously. The Deity graces in Thanga Kavasam in the later part of the day. The annual Lacharchanai is conducted during Vaikasi Visakam for three days, ending with Shatru Samhara Homam and a grand abishekam.

Religious PracticesShatru Samhara Thirisadai Archanai is done every Tuesday morning, invoking Lord Subramanya using the six syllables of Sa-Ra-Va-Na-Bha-Va. Participation is believed to lead to the destruction of evil and enemies, and bestow marriage and children.Shatru Shamkara Homam is a yagna invoking Lord Subramanya to free oneself from evils like anger, ego, jealousy, and arrogance. It is done during Vaikasi Visagam, Skandha Shasti, and Panguni Uthiram.Thaarabishekam is a vedic ceremony where milk is dripped on the Deity, accompanied by the recitation of Rudram eleven times. It is done for Sri Balamurugan and Sri Maragatheeshwarar during Agni Natchatiram.On Thei Pirai Ashtami, special poojas and homam are conducted for Kala Bhairava. Participation is believed to protect from evil and black deeds. The rituals include Maha Kala Bhairava Homam, abishekam, and offering of Punuku. Hundreds of devotees offer Ellu Deepam, considered sacred to Lord Bhairava.Pachaimalai is known for Annadhaanam, the act of feeding devotees. Ceremonies are usually followed by Annadhanam. The temple is covered under the Annadhaanam Scheme of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
