    According to Hindu legend, Arjuna, the Pandava prince from the Mahabharata, performed severe penance here to please Shiva. Arjuna shot a wild boar, but another hunter claimed the same. A fight ensued, and Arjuna realised the hunter was Shiva. Shiva and Parvati granted Arjuna the Pasupatham weapon.Periyapuranam, an 11th-century compilation, mentions Sambandar visiting the place after coming via Thillai Nataraja Temple.
