The Omkareshwar Temple was built by the Paramara Kings of Malwa in the 11th century CE. It later came under the Chauhan rulers. In the 13th century, it faced destruction by Muslim invaders but remained intact. The Holkar rulers, especially Rani Ahalya Bai Holkar, rebuilt it in the 19th century. After India's independence, the Archaeological Survey of India took over its care.
