The original Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bhuj was built by Swaminarayan in 1824. It was destroyed in the 2001 Gujarat earthquake. The new temple, made of marble and gold, was built to replace it. The idols from the old temple were moved to the new one.
The new temple was constructed at a cost of 1 billion Indian rupees on 5 acres of land. It features intricate carvings on its marble pillars and ceilings. The temple is one of the most expensive in Gujarat.
The inauguration ceremony took place from 15 to 23 May 2010. Many people, including international visitors, attended. The event was significant for the local hospitality industry, with 75% of hotel rooms booked during this period.
A 3-D film titled 'Sahajanand' was screened during the opening celebrations. It depicted the life and teachings of Swaminarayan and was the first of its kind in India.
