    Legends and BeliefsAccording to Hindu legend, Hiranyakashipu, an asura king, was troubling the celestial deities. His son Prahlada was a devotee of Vishnu, which angered Hiranyakashipu. During a heated argument, Vishnu appeared as Narasimha, a half-human with a lion face, and killed Hiranyakashipu during sunset in a doorway, saving Prahlada.Another legend involves Lakshmi performing penance and Hanuman carrying an image made of shaligramas. Lakshmi, in disguise, placed the image at this place, which grew into a mount. Narasimha appeared and set his abode in this stone statue. This is where Mahalakshmi got back into the chest of Vishnu.
