The temple dates back to the Chola period, with inscriptions from the 13th year of King Parantaka Chola I's reign (circa 920 CE) referring to the village as 'Velimaa Nallur'. A copper plate from 1429 AD records that King Veera Narasimha of the Vijayanagara dynasty gifted the villages of Ezhuchur and Venpaakkam to Sri Vyaasaachala Mahadeva Saraswathi Swamigal, the 54th pontiff of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, who attained 'Mukthi' at this site. The temple underwent its last consecration in 1948 but fell into disrepair over the years. In 2000, local villagers initiated a reconstruction project, culminating in a consecration ceremony on June 29, 2012.
