Mata Mansa Devi Mandir History and Significance

Mata Mansa Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti. It is located in the Panchkula district of Haryana, near Bilaspur.The temple covers 100 acres and is close to Sector 13 of Chandigarh (also called Mani Majra) and is 10 km from the famous Chandi Mandir and 4 km from the Panchkula bus stand. The nearest railway station is Chandigarh, situated on the Chandigarh–Kalka rail line.

This temple is one of the Shakti Pitha temples and is associated with seven Shakti goddesses: Mata Mansa Devi, Naina Devi, Jawalamukhi, Chintpurni, Brajeshwari, Chamunda Devi, and Jayanti Devi. The temple attracts lakhs of devotees during Navratri.

After the princely states merged into PEPSU, government support for the temple slowly ended, and the temple was left neglected. The Raja of Manimajra appointed pujaris as caretakers, but over time, they took control of the temple and its land. Unable to maintain the temple or support necessary arrangements for the growing number of devotees, the condition of the temple worsened, with poor facilities even during the Navratra melas. This led to the formation of the Shri Mata Mansa Devi Shrine Board (SMMDSB) under the Shri Mata Mansa Devi Shrine Act, 1991, under the guidance of the Haryana government. This was done to maintain management, improve infrastructure, and upkeep temple properties. The Chief Minister of Haryana heads the Shrine Board.

In 2021, the Government of India allocated ₹25 crore under the PRASAD scheme to enhance facilities at Mata Mansa Devi Temple.The temple attracts 2,000–3,000 devotees every day.

The temple complex has three sub-temples, with the main temple being the oldest. It was built by Maharaja Gopal Das Singh of Mani Majra, who ruled in 1783. He constructed the main Shri Mansa Devi Temple between 1811 and 1815 in Bilaspur, located in the Shivalik foothills, Panchkula district. There is also Patiala Shivalaya Temple close by, built in 1840 by Karam Singh, a Jat Sikh and then Maharaja of Patiala. This temple was also supported by the Manimajra princely state.
