  • Legends Beliefs
    In ancient times, the forest around Tirumullaivayil was occupied by two notorious tribesmen. King Thondaiman set out to defeat them in war. On the way, his elephant got entangled in Mullai plants. While freeing the elephant, they found a bleeding lingam. Shocked, the king prayed to Shiva, who appeared and asked him to build a temple. Shiva promised to support the king in defeating the tribesmen. The Nandi in this temple faces outwards, ready for battle, unlike in other Shiva temples.

    The main deities of the temple are Masilamaninathar (Shiva) and Kodiyidai Nayagi (Parvati). The positions of Shiva and Parvati are interchanged, believed to be due to their hurry to give darshan to the king.
