The Masilamaniswara Temple is believed to have been built by the Cholas during the 9th century CE. It has significant additions from later Chola kings and subsequent ruling empires. The temple has inscriptions from the Chola and Pandya periods, indicating its historical importance. An inscription from Uttama Chola's period records a land gift by Sembiyan Mahadevi. Other inscriptions from Rajendra I, Kulothunga III, and Rajaraja III also mention gifts to the temple. The large Nandi Bull statue commemorates King Thondaiman's victory over two demon brothers.
