The temple has two seven-tiered gateway towers and a large tank. The present structure was built during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century. Later expansions were done by the Vijayanagar rulers. The temple is maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Tamil Nadu.
