The temple's name, Thiruengoimalai, is derived from a legend where Sage Agasthya transformed into a bee ('i' in Tamil) to enter the temple for worship when its gates were closed. This site is also associated with the legend of Adiseshan and Vayu's contest, where a fragment of Mount Meru, in the form of an emerald, fell here, forming the Maragatha Lingam. Additionally, it is believed that worshipping this temple along with Kadambar Kovil and Rathnagreeswarar Temple in a single day grants salvation. The temple is also linked to the Chola Emperor Musukuntha Chakravarthy and the Siddhar Bogar, who meditated here and attained siddhi.
