According to legend, during the Dvapara Yuga, the area was part of the Khandava forest. Following the Khandava Dahana (burning of the forest), many temples in the region were destroyed. Years later, a farmer's wife discovered a bleeding stone while sharpening her sickle, leading to the revelation of the Sree Bhuvaneswary idol. The idol was consecrated near an ancient Shasta temple believed to have been established by Parashurama. The site where the idol was found is known as Valiya Manakkattu Kaavu.
