Legend says that a blacksmith named Kelan Kulasekhara saw a divine frog near Vellayani Lake. He caught it with his assistant's help and brought it to the Nair chieftains. They consecrated the Thiru Mudi (idol) with the divine spirit. The right to perform Uchabali is still held by the Nair families.
