Mahur, known as Mahurgad, is a town in Maharashtra's Nanded district. It is mentioned in ancient texts like the Devi Bhagawatam as Matripura, a significant pilgrimage site. The Devi Gita highlights it as a place of Shakti worship, where Renuka Devi resides. Appasaheb Deshmukh ruled Mahur in the 12th century.
Raje Udaram Deshmukh, a Deshastha Brahmin, was the Jagirdar of Mahur. He served in the Nizamshahi Kingdom and later joined the Mughals. His wife, Pandita Sawitribai, known as Rai Bagan, was a valiant ruler who fought alongside the Mughals. She was honoured by Aurangzeb for her bravery.
