Mahishasura Mardhini Temple History and Significance

The temple's origins are linked to a legend involving Parasurama, who, after killing his mother Renuka to fulfill his father's wishes, sought forgiveness for his sin. On the advice of Brahmins, he went to the Himalayas, leaving his sword in his village (Val = sword, Vacha = keeping, Goshtam = temple). The Chera King is said to have constructed a temple at this place and dedicated it to Goddess Bhagavathi. Additionally, the temple has historical significance with the Travancore royal family. King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma would place his sword before the deity to seek blessings before proceeding to war. The next heir to the throne would also visit the temple to seek blessings before the coronation ceremony. A tunnel once connected the temple to Padmanabhapuram Palace, though it is no longer operational. Even today, pooja materials and offerings are sent from the Travancore Palace every month and during festivals.
