The Mahakal Temple, built in 1782 by Lama Dorjey Rinzing, stands on the site of a former Buddhist monastery named 'Dorje-Ling'. This monastery was established in 1765 and was a sacred place for the Lepcha and Bhutia communities. The temple's history is marked by the invasion of the Gurkha Army in 1788, which led to the destruction of the monastery. The site then became a symbol of Hinduism, with three Shiva-Lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva manifesting in 1782. The temple is a revered religious shrine in the area.
