According to legend, a devout merchant sought Lord Shiva's darshan and was instructed to visit Kalahasti on Maha Shivaratri. En route, he reached K.V. Kuppam and realized he couldn't reach Kalahasti in time. An elderly man appeared, guided him to a nearby hill, revealed himself as Lord Shiva, and instructed the merchant to build a temple there. This site became known as Keezh Vazhi Thunai Kuppam. Additionally, Mahananda Siddha, born in 1930 in Dharmapuri district, played a significant role in the temple's history. After a vision from Lord Shiva in 2002, he moved to Mahadeva Malai, where he has been residing without food or water, dedicating his life to worship and serving devotees.
