Mahadev Temple in Deobaloda, Chhattisgarh, is a historic Hindu shrine from the Kalchuri Period, dedicated to Lord Shiva. A protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India, it draws many devotees, especially during Mahashivratri, when celebrations include a vibrant fair.
The sculptor of Mahadev Temple was so deeply engrossed in his work that he became oblivious to his surroundings, even his clothing. Day and night, he labored with unwavering dedication. His wife would bring him food, but one day, his sister arrived instead. Overcome with shame upon realizing his state, the sculptor leaped from the temple rooftop into a sacred pond within the complex, known as the Kund. In distress, his sister also jumped into a nearby pond. Both water bodies still exist today, with the pond called Kasara Talab, named after the kalasha (sacred pot) she was believed to be carrying. A kalash-shaped stone remains there as a testament to the tale.
Locals also believe that a hidden tunnel within the Kund leads to a temple in Arang. It is said that the sculptor, after jumping in, discovered the tunnel and emerged in Arang, where he turned to stone. The Bhanadeva Temple now stands at that spot. The Kund itself features 23 steps and two wells, one of which has a continuous water flow that never ceases.
