The temple is believed to have been constructed by Kulothunga Chola III in the early 13th century CE. An inscription dated 1205-1206 CE from his reign is found within the temple. Kulothunga Chola III is said to have built 64 Shiva temples to absolve himself of Brahmahatti Dosha, and this temple is among them. Another inscription from Rani Mangammal of the Nayaka dynasty, dated 1685 CE, is also present in the temple complex. Additionally, four Tamil inscriptions, including one from the period of Rajaraja III, have been discovered here, further attesting to its historical significance.
