Macheswarar Temple History and Significance

According to the Matsya Purana, the demon king Somukasura stole the four Vedas and hid them under the sea. Lord Vishnu assumed the Matsya Avatar (fish form) to retrieve the Vedas and restore cosmic order. After accomplishing this, Vishnu's exuberant play in the ocean caused disturbances. To teach him a lesson, Lord Shiva took the form of a stork (Narai). Realizing his mistake, Vishnu worshipped Shiva at this site to seek forgiveness. The temple is believed to have been originally built by the Pallavas and was reconstructed in the latter half of the 20th century.
