According to legend, after completing the Palani Murugan idol, Bogar created another idol at Poombarai using an amalgam of nine poisonous substances, known as Navapashanam, believed to possess medicinal properties. Over time, the temple fell into neglect and was engulfed by the forest. It was later rediscovered and restored by a Chera king, who reconstructed the temple and reinstated worship practices.
