This temple is known as a place of prayer where the famous Lord Murugan resided in Cuddalore district. Here, it is happening daily that the sevarthis get their reasonable demands in writing and get their Pradhu built within 90 days from the date of building, and those whose demands are fulfilled get back the pradhin they gave to Swami. Also, people with incurable diseases stay in this thalam as a mandala or half a mandala and visit Kolanjayappara, rub the body with the Vepenna offered by worshiping at the said shrine and drink it to achieve complete healing. The sevarthis pray for their grievances, and when their grievances are completely resolved, they pay gold, silver, brass, cash, grains, cattle etc. as their fine debt to the temple, which makes this temple special. Even today, according to the Sekhi peoples saying, Varanach Chevalodu Varamail Kulagan Vittan was offered to Lord Muruga to get Nagan Kannappa as his son.

Annadanam program has been started in this temple since August 2002. 50 people are distributed daily under Annadanam scheme. Devotees who wish to give alms can pay a permanent deposit of Rs.20000/-(twenty thousand rupees) (Alms will be given once a year on a day specified by the devotees) Those who wish to donate can directly pay at the temple office and get a receipt. You can donate Rs.1,750/- to give alms to 50 people in a day and do alms on any day you want. There is income tax exemption (80G) for those who donate alms.

  • Legends Beliefs
    As per Hindu legend, Sundarar, the famous Nayanmar saint in Saivite tradition, came to Virudhachalam during his old age. He sang praise of the Vriddhagiriswarar. Shiva was pleased and wanted him to sing again. He sent his son Muruga in the form of a hunter to the Kolanji forest through which Sundarar was traversing.The hunter took away Sundarar's belongings and demanded him to return to Virudhachalam. Understanding it as a divine play, Sundarar returned and sang praise of Shiva again. Muruga subsequently set his abode in the Kolanji forest as Kolanjiappar.Another legend mentions a cow milking under a kolanji bush daily. People found a stone form under it, later identified with Sundarar's travel from Vridhachaalam.

    The temple has separate shrines for Idumban and Kadamban. There are two images of Muniappa facing the sanctum in the Mahamandapam. There is also a shrine of Siddhi Vinayakar in the Mahamandapam.

    Devotees offer hen, cattle, and sheep to the temple. Other offerings include facsimiles or shapes of body parts made of tin. Offering money or objects equal to one's weight, tonsuring, carrying milk pots, and piercing body parts with Vel are common forms of worship.The temple also offers an Annadanam scheme from 2002, where lunch is served to devotees every day.

    The temple has a five-tiered gateway tower, the gopuram, leading to a pillared hall and the sanctum. The sanctum faces East and the image of the presiding deity is a small altar, unlike most temples in the state which have sculpted granite or stucco images.During the consecration in 2010, a newly built Northern temple tower, marriage hall, shopping complex, Mani Mandap, Sidhar Mandap, and a guesthouse for devotees were added with public contributions.

    The major festivals of the temple include the Panguni Uthiram festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Panguni (March - April), ten-day Vasantha Utsavam during Vaikasi (May- June), and Adi festival. During Panguni Uthiram, the flag hoisting is done on the first day, and the presiding deities are taken in a chariot around the streets.During Adi festival, hundreds of devotees carry pots of milk and Kavadi around the streets, followed by a feast attended by close to 5,000 people.
