Historically, the temple is associated with the Ettuveetil Karthakanmar, a group of eight influential families: Alakkodu, Kovilakathu, Puthuparambathu, Velikkakathu, Pulikkal, Kuzhuveli, Puthanveli, and Kunnath Parambu. These families, now known as Kaimalmar, were prominent in the administration of the area known as Karapuram under the Kochi kings. Legend has it that the Kaimalmar brought the Chammanad Bhagavathy from Kodungallur and consecrated her at this site. Another belief suggests that a Velichappadu (oracle) traveling with Goddess Bhadrakali and the Kaimalmar forcefully consecrated her here.
