The Khajuraho Group of Monuments was built by the Chandela dynasty between 885 CE and 1000 CE. The temples were initially forgotten and overgrown by the jungle until rediscovered in 1838 by Captain T.S. Burt. They were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986 due to their outstanding architecture and cultural significance.
