Tenkasi was established during the early 13th century CE. Inscriptions from 1384 mention gifts to Brahmanas for reciting Vedas and Puranas. Between 1428 and 1460, Parakrama Pandyan ruled the region. The temple received gifts from the Madurai Nayaks in the 16th century. A 180-foot tower was completed in 1990.
