  • Legends Beliefs
    As Skanda Purana describes, Shiva first married Sati, the granddaughter of Brahma and daughter of Daksha. Daksha did not like Shiva because, Shiva is known for his detached lifestyle, living simple, begged for food, danced in cremation grounds, and wore ashes instead of fine clothes. During a Yagna ceremony, Daksha insulted Shiva in public. Hurt by this, Sati burned herself in anger and sorrow over the insult to her husband.Shiva’s followers, led by Virabhadra, destroyed the Yagna.Shiva known for his emotional and physical detachment was not expected to marry again. So, the demon Taraka believed he was safe, as only Shiva’s son could defeat him. The gods (Devas) helped Shiva marry Parvati by asking Kama, the god of love, to wake him from deep meditation. This angered Shiva, and he burned Kama with the fire from his third eye. Shiva gave this powerful energy to Agni (the fire god) to hold until it could turn into his child. But even Agni couldn't bear the heat, so he passed it to the river Ganga. Ganga then placed it in a lake in a forest of Shara. From this lake, a child with six faces was born—named in six powerful forms called: Eesanam, Sathpurusham, Vamadevam, Agoram, Sathyojatham, and Adhomugam. Six divine mothers, known as the Kritikas found the child and cared for him. Because of them, he was named Kartikeya. He grew up quickly and killed the demon Taraka. He is also called Kumara, meaning "youth."
