The temple is believed to be over 500 years old and is associated with the legend of the demon Kanchan, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. According to the legend, the demon was slain by Nandi, Lord Shiva's mount, and the scattered pieces of his body transformed into Swayambhu (self-manifested) lingams across the hill. This event led to the hill being named Kanchanagiri. The temple complex houses approximately 1008 such lingams, revered by devotees. In the early 20th century, Sri Sivagnana Swamigal, an industrialist from Malaysia, dedicated his resources to the development of the temple, including the construction of a Murugan temple, temple tank, and other facilities. He attained Samadhi in 1973, and his disciples continue to maintain the temple.
