The Kal Bhairav temple in Ujjain is built over the remains of an older temple. The original temple is believed to have been constructed by King Bhadrasen. It is mentioned in the Avanti Khanda of the Skanda Purana. Images from the Paramara period have been found here.
The temple walls once had Malwa paintings, but only traces remain now. The current structure shows Maratha influence. After the Maratha defeat in the Third Battle of Panipat, Mahadaji Shinde offered his turban to the deity, praying for victory. He later restored the temple.
A replica of the temple exists on the Bhuj-Mundra road in Gujarat.
