According to legend, sage Urosamar floated flowers in the Tamiraparani River, and the sixth flower reached this place. He established the temple for Kailasanathar. The lingam in the temple is believed to be an aspect of Shani, one of the planetary deities. The temple's flagstaff is said to have been brought from Devi Kanya Kumari in Kanniyakumari.The Nataraja in this temple is called Santhana Sababathi, anointed with sandal. The temple is one of the nine Nava Kailasam temples on the banks of the Tamiraparani River, each associated with a planetary deity. This temple is linked to the planet Shani (Saturn).

The main deity of the temple is Kailasanathar (Shiva) in the form of a Lingam. His consort, Sivakami (Parvati), is housed in a west-facing shrine. The west-facing shrine adjacent to the flagstaff has a hall with yali pillars, where Nataraja is housed.The temple has sculptural representations of sage Romasa, Agnipathar, and Veerabadrar on its pillars, dating back to the Nayak Empire. The image of Nataraja is always covered with sandal paste and is called Rathnasabapathy.

The temple celebrates four daily rituals and three yearly festivals. The Brahmotsavam festival during the Tamil months of Chittirai (April - May) and Aippasi (October - November) is the most prominent.
