The Jnanakshi Rajarajeshwari Temple was established by Sri Sivaratnapuri Swamiji, also known as Sri Tiruchi Swamigal, in 1978. He founded the Sri Kailash Ashrama Mahasamsthana in Kenchenahalli, now called Rajarajeshwari Nagar. His guru, Sri Sivapuri Baba, guided him to perform significant work in the south.
On 14 January 1960, Sri Tiruchi Swamiji, while travelling to Mysore, saw three sacred eagles. They reminded him of the deities Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswathi. This led him to choose Kenchenahalli for his Ashrama. He laid the foundation stone for the temple there.
