According to legend, the site of the temple was originally a large ant-hill surrounded by stagnant water, where a Shiva Lingam was placed and worshipped. Chinna Bommi Nayaka, a Vijayanagara chieftain, is said to have dreamt of Lord Shiva instructing him to build a temple at this location. Consequently, in 1550 CE, the temple was constructed during the reign of Emperor Sadasivadeva Maharaya. Over the centuries, the temple faced periods of neglect, especially during the Muslim invasion when it was used as an arsenal. Worship was reinstated in 1981, and the temple has since been maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
