According to local legend, a man purchased land in the Sriharikota forest and instructed his servants to clear it. When attempting to cut a palm tree, the tree spoke, pleading not to be cut. Despite this, the man proceeded, and the tree bled, causing him to faint. A saint advised that Lord Shiva resided in the tree and recommended applying a mixture of vibhuti, sandal, and rose water to stop the bleeding. The tree was then carved into a Shiva idol, and a temple was built in Sriharikota. Due to the establishment of a rocket launching site, the temple was relocated to its current location in Edamani.
