The temples are part of a regional legend mentioned in the Brahmanda Purana and Padma Purana. A sage named Suprabha performed penance here and found a balance and a bow, which turned into a human couple. This place is called Tolavillimangalam.Another legend tells of the Ashwin twins who prayed here and were granted their wishes by Vishnu. They performed penance and had a dip in the tank, which came to be known as Ashvini Tirtha.In another legend, an asura named Somaka stole the four Vedas from Brahma. Brahma performed penance, and Vishnu appeared as Devapiran, killed Somuka, and restored the Vedas to Brahma.
