The Hoysaleswara Temple, built in the 12th century, is a significant monument in Halebidu, Karnataka. It was constructed under the patronage of King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala Empire. The temple's construction began around 1121 CE and was completed by 1160 CE. It served as a major religious and cultural center during the Hoysala period.
Halebidu, originally known as Dorasamudra, was the capital of the Hoysala Empire for nearly 300 years. The temple, however, lacks a dedication inscription, likely lost over time. An inscription found nearby credits Ketamalla, an officer of King Vishnuvardhana, with its construction.
In the early 14th century, the temple and the capital were plundered by the Delhi Sultanate, leading to a period of neglect. Despite this, the temple remains a testament to the architectural and artistic achievements of the Hoysalas.
