According to legend, seven sages—Athiri, Kucha, Vasishta, Brighu, Gautama, Kashyapa, and Angira—performed penance on Lord Brahma in the Himalayas. Lord Brahma, impressed by their devotion, extolled the greatness of Lord Shiva and Kanchipuram, stating that a good deed performed in Kanchipuram is equivalent to many good deeds elsewhere. Following this advice, the sages traveled to Kanchipuram, bathed in the Sivaganga Theertham of the Ekambaranathar Temple, and installed Shiva Lingas under their respective names. Sage Gautama installed and worshipped the Shiva Linga at this temple, leading to the deity being named Gauthameswarar. This temple is considered the seventh among the Saptha Sthana temples of Kanchipuram.
